Evan Almighty

July 4, 2007 |

Dr James Dobson had some negative things to say about Evan Almighty (read them at the Plugged In Mag’s review page here). Overall I do agree with him but at the same time I don’t.

Evan Almighty is a great story about a modern day Noah and it really makes you think about how we treat God and how well we listen and obey (or don’t, as the case may be).

Theologically there are some sections which miss the mark completely but those can be corrected by the Church. I’d much rather a movie which overtly teaches bad theology than one which subtly teaches it and teaches society wrong beliefs without them knowing they are being taught anything at all (Superman Returns being a fine example of this).

Go watch it. It’s fun.

The movie was a nice, enjoyable lark for the entire family, but I hated the end. It was just cheesy, and it’s a shame because they had the convention in Bruce Almighty to clean things up nicely. I think that ending is what will doom an otherwise good movie to box office disaster.

What part of the ending didn’t you like? Was it his conversation with God?

No, I didn’t like the ark ending up at congress and all the saccharine that ensued.
Here’s what I wish would have happened:
The storm which started continued instead of abruptly ending. A lighting bolt zaps one of the naysayers (doesn’t kill them but does make them smoke ;-)) then everyone runs on the ark in a panic. The door closed automatically and only the audience should have known about the dam. Kawhoosh, comes the flood and wipes out everything in its path. Evan is heartbroken about all the destruction as the ark settles down on the sea, because he thinks everything is wiped out. Then presto, he’s in the white office room with God mopping and talking (a la Bruce Almighty). Next scene, in the Capital, Evan is getting reamed out by the dirty congressman, in comes the FBI and arrests him and then everything wraps nice and clean.

A whole lot more than you were asking for, but I really didn’t like that ending!
